The Process
Forging involves heating steel to around 1300c and deforming or moulding the material. Metal can go through three different states: a solid, plastic and liquid. Blacksmiths work with the plastic state, the malleable state; it is the state when the metal moulds like clay under the hammer. Its heated in the forge and then worked on using various forging processes. With each heat there is a certain amount of time before the material cools and needs to be returned to the fire. It involves lots of energy and physical strength to transform and leave a hand forged aesthetic in the steel, the hammer marks are like figure prints and It’s this process that makes the work beautiful.
