Participants must be age 18+ for insurance purposes. We offer a variety of courses designed specifically for 11 to 17-year-olds, and it is required that a parent or guardian remains present at all times during the sessions.

Before and during the course, it is essential that you are in good physical health and free from the influence of drugs, alcohol, or any prescription medications that could impair your ability to concentrate effectively and ensure the safety of both yourself and those around you.

Personal Protective Equipment

You will be required to wear stout footwear ideally steel toe cap boots. Rubber boots and riggers are not suitable. The boot needs to protect against anything dropping into or onto them and aid stability in the workshop. Please wear sensible clothing, nothing synthetic or flammable (we are working with fire). Non baggy jeans and close-fitting cotton T-shirts/work wear is advisable. Long hair will need to be tied back, and any jewellery removed. We provide the rest of your PPE including aprons, gloves, safety glasses (we have over glasses safety glasses as well) and ear defenders.

Health & Safety

Work of Iron takes health and safety very seriously and has taught hundreds of students and never had any injuries worse than a minor burn, we want to keep it this way so please read the following carefully.

Blacksmithing involves working with high temperatures, sharp tools, and potentially dangerous materials, requiring participants to take safety precautions.

Participants are responsible for their own safety due to the inherent hazards of the craft. This includes being mindful of the safety of other students and using provided safety equipment and instructions correctly.

Blacksmithing is physically demanding and participants will be expected to get there hands dirty, however there is no pressure, and we will work at a comfortable pace, an instructor will be on hand to help, demonstrate, and give guidance, at all times.

On the course your instructor will explain and demonstrate how to work safely in the forge, these instructions will need to be adhered to but please do ask if you are unsure or concerned about anything.

Should an injury occur our instructors are first aid trained and will be on hand to assist.
