CRAFT A CARVING AXE
We have an axe to grind, teaching a long established and highly skilled process. The construction involves laminating a tough mild steel body with a hard high carbon edge. Our craft a carving axe is a challenging course which will require strength and determination. You can expect to be blacksmithing in full swing with fire welding, punching, pressing, smith and striking, right upto the end result, the creation of your own unique hand forged axe.
In this course, you will learn the fundamentals of axe making. Day 1 will start off with marking out your material and punching an eye. We will demonstrate different methods to achieve this, then moving onto forge welding the billet, ready for drifting and drawing out the following day.
Throughout the course, you will have full control of a fire and be working directly at the anvil, practically forging your very own axe with assistance as necessary.
On day 2 you will have more time working independently, shaping, finishing, hardening and tempering. We will supply you with a handle for your axe head and show you how to haft an axe if time permits.
Due to the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982 Knife Dealer’s Licence and the Offensive Weapons Act 2019 we do not put a sharp or pointy edge on our axes.
The course starts at 10am, includes a 1-hour lunch break, and ends before 4pm on both days. There is no rush and you can take your time enjoying the Pitt street food market. You keep all your work and learn how to finish and care for your projects. Classes are small, with up to five people per session or can be booked as a private event. This is a practical experience, so be prepared to get your hands dirty. However there is nothing to worry about and an expert blacksmith will be there to guide you every step of the way.
