THE ART OF CHASING & REPOUSSÉ
Chasing and Repoussé is the skill of turning your drawings into three-dimensional art, blending illustration and sculpture. We teach this method as it can be effectively applied to forged ironwork, a traditional technique that has demonstrated a remarkable evolution of forms throughout history. We recommend checking out some of the examples you can find in our library.
The Art of Chasing & Repoussé teaches decorating a 100mm square sheet using hammers and punches. You learn to shape both sides of the copper to create a low relief design, in the pitch and on the stakes. This therapeutic process is great for making a variety of decorative objects such as jewellery, sculptures, puppets, signs, and costume pieces—like drawing in a 3D relief on metal. The course starts at 10am, includes a 1-hour lunch break, and ends before 4pm. There is no rush and you can take your time enjoying the Pitt street food market. You keep all your work and learn how to finish and care for your projects. This course is tailored to five people with no previous experience necessary. You can expect a productive workshop designed specifically for grown-ups, as it requires focused concentration and quite a bit of hammering to complete the tasks.
Use a simple line drawing you can bring with you (print or save it on your phone). Look at images from past workshops to see examples. If you don’t have a design, we have options to choose from on the day. You will learn heating/annealing, lining, blocking out, refining on a pitch bowl, and finishing. The final product is a 100mm x 100mm copper sheet turned into your own personal artwork.
